Florence Pugh has explained why she opted to cut her hair, saying that she wanted to “take vanity out of the picture” when making her decision.
The 27-year-old Oppenheimer actress talked about her reasons for wanting the short hairstyle in an interview with the Radio Times after making her red carpet debut with it at the 2023 Met Gala in May.
“I made a conscious decision to appear that way. According to the DailyMail, Pugh stated, “I wanted vanity out of the picture. It’s challenging for an audience to look past Hollywood’s high level of glamour, especially for women. I work hard to maintain my natural appearance whenever I don’t need to be glamorous or wear a full face of makeup. It benefits the viewers.
Vanity is no more, Pugh said. Then, the public can only see your bare face.

This is not the first time Pugh has tried to “control [her] image,” according to her, who told the publication that she has been focusing on it ever since she started her acting career.
Even at the start of her career, she admitted, she struggled to maintain control over her image.
The Midsommar singer revealed that she prefers less makeup because it makes her “less of a sparkly thing on screen,” adding that she also thinks about how her hair would affect her ability to connect with audiences.
“I find that wearing less makeup makes me appear less shiny on screen, which helps. I think it’s more appropriate for me to make ugly faces now, she remarked.
Pugh told reporters that she shaved her head for her role in the upcoming movie We Live In Time and that she had “happily” consented to do so before unveiling the buzzed hairstyle at the Met Gala.
